Engine issue.

Hi, to all you Land Rover owners out there.I am a new member and looking forward to sucking up your collective knowledge about your Land Rover stories, advice and recommendations.I have a 1965 2a ex. Air Force I think, which was registered on an"L" reg when sold on in 1973.The original lump was a 2.25 petrol, replaced at sometime with a 2.25 diesel .It came to me in bits about 12 years ago, and now I am retired I have time to restore it.I have got as far as restoring the chassis and springs so far.I recently stripped the engine as it wouldn't turn, and found that mice had taken up residence in the air intake evidenced by the copious supply of cobnuts lying therein, and pot1 was full of water. On further investigation I found the pot was split on the side nearest number 2 part way down the bore and the piston seized. The block is a BL with a code ERC 4940 which was made apparently between 1980/84.It's engine number is10j016946.I took the block to an engine specialist hoping to have a liner fitted, but he said it can't be done.So if anyone out there knows where I can lay hands on a usable bare block or knows where I might get it lined I would be very grateful.

Hi Stan the man. Thanks for your extremely kind offer, but the 12j is a 2.5 litre block and mine is a 2.25, a bit earlier and less horsepower. Thanks again for your reply.

Hi guys. Thanks for your messages. The pot has a weird split.I thought it could be bored and lined, but the local engine guy says no.Could that be because it goes into the waterway between 1 and 2?Or maybe it's not worth the bother of boring one cylinder.Shame because the head and rest of the engine looks good although I will get the head pressure tested if I can find a block.

Couple minutes looking on eBay. Diesels are cheaper, not as desirable....but might be an option.

I have a 3brg diesel engine sat in a shed....it's an awful long way from you though. Other end of the country!

Thanks for your input Stevebus.Funny, I said about making it a garden ornament to the missus, but she wasn't keen.!Big Sandy, I was looking for a five bearing if possible, but it's a good shout as the original would have been a three before it was swapped out.I will tax my motorhome in March so travelling up your way not out of the question.I will check out eBay, although I did look yesterday and didn't see those two lumps. Thanks guys.

5 BRG diesel's are like rocking horse droppings I've been told.(that's what's in mine)

If you want a 5 BRG petrol, then you're probably looking at early 90 engines. Not many went into late Series.

3brg would be a more "original" fit for yours right enough. Not that there's much visually, other than the extra webs cast in the block. 3 brg parts are more prolific.

To be honest I don't mind fitting an earlier lump even if it's petrol.I'm not in a massive hurry either as there's loads of other work to do on other areas of the beast before any reassembling takes place. The eBay lumps were interesting. The one in Canvey Island looks a possibility for a rebuild, and as you said, the parts are readily available.

It's scary really. There was a time you couldn't give them away. We've scrapped a few, buried one once....*

Nowadays, worth a bomb.

*Funny tale. That engine was out if a 2a. The lad had a later 2a petrol, which had been 'rebuilt'. He was racing an xr2 from the lights when it threw a leg out of bed. "Whatsa my gonna do?"

Joking I says, dig the engine up out if the garden and bang that in. So, he did

Blow me if it didn't start first time! (Well, we ran it with the starter and no plugs, with paraffin in the bores first...)

Crazy times

I thought you wanted a diesel! I've got a friend who has a petrol 2.25 engine, I've just spoke to him about finding you a diesel, I won't ring him again tonight, probably be a little bad mannered but I will ring him tomorrow and see what he says, I think it might of sat outside for a while is the only problem

I would prefer a diesel Stevebus, but a petrol would still work and it did originally have a petrol engine so I appreciate your efforts on my behalf.Big Sandy, great story.I spent fifty one years in the building trade and dug up all sorts including a Belfast sink( now in my garden with dafs in ironically) , coins, bottles, and a metal book token from 1794, but never a Land Rover engine!

The irony goes further. We buried it with a little cross, with the grille badge on it šŸ¤£

Strangest thing I ever dug up unintentionally was a safe, door cracked open. Spent a wee while in the local polis station over that one.

I gather the safe was empty.Could have weighed it in for scrap.I slid one out of a first floor window into a skip once and the scrap man came and took it.Again sadly empty of valuables.ā˜¹ļø

I thought the blocks of the petrol and diesel were the same? or is it only that you can use a diesel bottom and convert to petrol but not the other way round..?

(Should we move this thread to the Series section..?)
