Diesel Engines HVO,

@Landpig - let us know how it goes. My TD5 is a bit of a soot chucker and more often than not gives me trouble at MOT time with emissions - I've heard HVO can help reduce emissions but I've been dubious of running it.

Hi jenks69, I will post any conclusions with hvo. With regards to your emissions, is yours modified in any way? I have own my early td5 for about 15 years and done pretty much every recognized mod/upgrade in that time and never had a soot/emissions issue. Have you tried a fuel system clean? I also use Millers fuel additive which I believe seems to smooth the engine and quieten down the top end , it also keeps fuel system clean, injectors etc.
 
There seems to be some confusion here HVO is different from 1st Gen Biofuel
HVO stands for hydrogenated or hydrotreated vegetable oil. It is made by reacting vegetable or other oils with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure.
It is made up of straight chained molecules, contains few impurities and burns very cleanly.
HVO is part of the paraffinic fuel family. It is a second-generation biofuel, also known as an advanced biofuel or renewable diesel, made from vegetable oils or animal fats. Unlike first-generation biofuels, these raw sources are processed using a specialist hydro-treatment to achieve high levels of purity. The result is a stable fuel with a long-shelf life and excellent performance year-round.
HVO is a drop-in replacement for diesel. It delivers an efficient and reliable performance for vehicles and machinery across industries.
It is made from renewable resources but does not contain FAME – the root cause of many of the fuel storage problems and fuel filter blocking issues.
It has a naturally high cetane number meaning that ignition is easy and combustion is complete – this reduces smoke and particulate emissions.
It is a drop-in replacement for many distillate fossil fuel grades such as diesel, gas oil and kerosene. It can also be blended with traditional fuels in any proportion.
It has good cold weather properties and good long-term storage stability.
Tailpipe emissions of CO and CO2 are reduced due to the high hydrogen to carbon ratio and some reduction in NOx is claimed, although this is usually a function of engine set-up and combustion temperature.
HVO offers an immediate and fungible alternative to fossil fuels without any need for vehicle modification or changes to supply infrastructure.
Well-sourced regular fuel, stored correctly and dosed with additives that keep the injectors clean and optimise the combustion process, when used in a well-maintained engine will reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption by up to 4%.
Thanks for posting an accurate version of HVO - it’s density is lower than standard EN590 (forecourt fuels) which will reduce power slightly. I was more interested in how much it costs - with red diesel being outlawed in April, this looks to be an ideal solution.

I heard about the red diesel in April That also means for the use in agricultural vehicles as well ?

After market intercooler, silicone pipes, EGR delete. Everything else is standard. I've had mine for nearly 13 years and it's always been close on emissions and always needs a "hot run" before the test. I tend to drive it like I stole it.

I used to use Shell diesel without fail because it always ran like a bag of spanners on anything else (that's not so much of an issue since cleaning map sensor). I wonder if new MAF / MAP / Fuel temp sensor would help.

Might give it a tank of shell V-power and a drop of fuel additive next tank load.

You better start saving up ,god that stuff is expensive 😄..

I had always intended in getting a map, but I'm forever breaking drive line components. I've done two front props, rear prop, rear half shafts, front drive members, front CVs, clutch and now waiting on MOT then it's time to change the flywheel. (none of that has happened off road - all been on road). My truck gets a hammering towing / loaded to the max and I've got a heavy right foot.
 
Sorry for the delaybut finally stuck some hvo in. Firstly I've gone for approximately half and half with supermarket low sulpur. First impressions smooth and responsive but most of all the lack of exhaust smell! Only done about 20 miles so we'll see .

Hi, yes all my initial findings are confirmed. I didn't want to big it up too much but she goes like a stabbed rat! Starts easier on very cold mornings as well. Td5 is a different beast to tdv6 , bit mor agricultural, but I would say give it a whirl. It is expensive and I don't do many miles but if everyone starts using occasionally the price will come down as demand goes up and therefore production. We will then be less reliant on fossil oil and be smug that we are saving the planet 😏😅
 
Hopefully this option will become viable and affordable in the future for those of us who are unable to afford (or don't want) an electric conversion on our older Land Rovers and to be able to actually keep driving them in the real world...
