JayHoe's '72 2.25 88" rebuild

See young 'uns, you don't need pimped up Saxos to attract women (ok, ok, I realise some of them are 70 but, hey!)

The series was rather popular at college :D

Letting a certain lady drive 'off road' (actually just a dirt track near the farm) went down far better then just going to the cinema ;);)

She lives within walking distance from a LR parts supplier too! :D

Well judging by all the attention Annie got at Stoneleigh, there's no doubting her pulling power! And I don't mean the horses under the bonnet either.

(Sorry I didn't get to say cheerio, John, but I think you were filming bike porn when we had to leave.)

Just think thats thread confusion Ian! Malc, it was great meeting you as well. No doubt we will meet again!

I got back to the truck and it was sat there all alone :) Yeo, filming those bikes thru the last showing. Anyway, hope you had a good trip back.

Hmmm, I still have to think of a name for the landy....

John,

Just wondering what your next project will be? do you intend stripping and refurbing the sankey, painting it to match Hannah Belle etc? or are you still recovering (mentally, physically and financially) from the HB build? ;):)

Ian

Financially! Still trying to make inroads into paying off the debt from the rebuild. The Sankey will be next. I *hope* to blast and galv the chassis and do a full rebuild as per the truck.

I am also always on the lookout for a cheap 200 for spare that I could rebuild, and I do have a spare gearbox and would love to take the time and do a rebuild on that as well. Right now, I am looking for full time work (depression seems well under control and Doc wants to wean me off the drugs in spring - yay!) to enable me to bring in more money. Tanning would then be a sideline.

Mostly though I gotta clear the debt first :)

J

John,

We are in a similar position with Annies refurb costs - they went a tad over budget and most of that went on credit card so we need to clear that off before spending any serious money on Ciggy. Thankfully for me I'd already bought all the paint etc so I can crack on with the body panels over the next few months without having to spend much money.

Thing is we were in a situation were we had to have Annie on the road for my wife to use AND as a backup for the aging jap truck so once we'd started we had to finish - we had no option but to stuff it on credit card. I guess you'll have been in similar situation with Hannah Belle towards the end of the rebuild, so close that you just wanted it finished.

Oh well, I look forward to your sankey rebuild when it gets started. :)

Ian

Yep. We reached the point of having psainted and then decided to go for it and just bought as and when needed and put it on the card so I wouldn't be tied up with do-wait-do-wait.

Kierran,

I have now put 5K on the KM2s and love them. I don't notice any noise from them (although my engine is quite loud) and they are generally reported as amazingly quiet for a mud tyre. I also haven't had any aqua planing or indeed so much as one incident when I thought they may be not gripping. NB I don't go fast, generally 55 max, and the tyres are to all intents and purposes new.

Oh, and they look like the dogs doodahs!

I don't regret them for a moment. (265/75R16 on black modulars)

Just though I would give a quick update.

Hannah-Belle has now been running for 23 months and 13,500 miles with no major issues. Only probs so far have been loosening of hubs and a couple of hub oil leaks. She is getting over 30mpg every tank now, with the best being 36.3mpg and the running average being 33.4 (last 10 tanks??) and all time average of 30.2. So very happy with that.

The tyres still show no visible wear!

Cheers

John

The tyres

Great news John. Your mpg is superb and even more so when considering you have no FWH's and your speedo cable may be sticking slightly. Also knowing the roads around your house it is even more amazing as unlike the roads by me they are not exactly nice straight lines - I felt seasick after driving my truck down to you with the number of hairpin bends in your local roads. :)

Fantastic to hear HB is running so well. Goes to prove that running a Series truck as a daily driver is not as bad as people may think. I notice on your fuelly page that HB is not really that far behind the little i10's in the overall scheme of things too. Well Done!

PS. I didn't think Annies KM2's showed any signs of wear either but when I measured them they showed between 0.5mm and 1mm of tread wear over 7K miles. Still a superb result for an open treaded mud tyre used mostly on tarmac and giving a theoretical life of well over 40K miles before they get below 8mm of tread depth (a realistic low point for a mud tyre to be useful) and potentially giving some 80K miles before they become illegal. Other than on sheet ice and compacted snow I have found them to be a superb tyre even for road use. So quiet compared to other tyres I've tried and such great grip for a mud tyre on tarmac.

For A....

The first quarter panel... how I cut it to enable access to the side spot welds...

And now the process from the start for the second side...

1. Spot welds across middle

2. Spots down bottom half of door lip

3. Rivets just inside bottom of door

4. Two cuts, top down thru two light holes and BELOW the join area of the wheel arch/box to the bottom

5. Lift and bend hinged at uncut bit until it breaks leaving just 1" approx strip down corner. (Note, on my pic you can see the remains of the sill bar brace bracket which is also beng replaced. Normally this would still be there just to make it all a little more awkward.

6. Spots at top corner join down to top of wheel arch/box

7.Spots below wheel arch/box in rear corner

8. Remove final strip and clean up any nubbins left

HTH!
Hi JayHoe when you fitted the quarter panels, did you rivet them to the mid way horizontal panel (wheel box?) or just Tiger seal them? I've just had new panels repainted and would prefer not to have a line of silver rivet heads on show unless absolutely necessary - thanks!
