Series III Full Electric Conversion

Yeah. He said he might. But I doubt they ever will.

For the same reason they seem to have shut down their parts shop they had online.

They just get too many questions from 'enthusiasts' which takes up a lot of time.
No, he said 'probably' - therefore very likely. I get that you don't think it will happen, but that's not what he is saying in the video.

Yep, cheaper to modify your Tesla to go off-roading.

The idea of an affordable conversion is of course the intent of this thread. ;)

I'd like to think mine will still come in well under £10k, plus labour.

I don't see DIY'ers spending the £60k on the kit I'm afraid.

His actual words were 'we're not there yet'. I doubt they ever will be.

Sacked off work this afternoon and set about positioning where the battery boxes will go.

Now off to get some sturdy steel for the supports.

Very interesting thread, maybe admin can set up a dedicated forum "page" maybe under technical as there are a number of us looking at this option.

All things being equal I am collecting a rolling chassis plus gearbox next week as the basis of an electric build; a recent article in "Classic Land Rover" Aug 2022 made interesting reading for a Series one conversion which also retains original drive drain. Falcon Electric being used for components, the batteries there are "cells" that can be grouped together.

Another site in Australia has some interesting ideas https://www.jauntmotors.com/vehicles

The battery location on yours looks better to me as its lower and does not infringe with an already small load space. At present I plan to use a series gearbox but possible with an Ashcroft High Ratio transfer conversion.

I am a time off yet need to rebuild a chassis and bulkhead but will put in provision for power steering, servo brakes and cooling which seems to be a possible issue.

The only other potential fly in the ointment is the DVLA but others have been exploring this as well.

Thanks to all contributors.

I am also considering power steering, an article is the The Landy, Issue 105; Oct 2022 page 8 highlights a company using a Vauxhall electric power steering pump to power an P38 box and defender steering column. AL Services. Yet to look it up.

Thought I would put this here as-well look on Peterborough show thread bit if info 🙂 …electric Lightweight .View attachment 296126View attachment 296127
I popped into this place near me who makes electric landys …very interesting the guys are bloody clever .
They make all the brackets for the battery packs and gearbox mounts etc laser cut them and powder coat for an excellent finish .
I couldn’t take any photos I did ask but excepted his reasons .they can be found on social media ...I’m nosey is one of them 🤣
They had a series 1 there belonging to a local man that was being converted..2 Range Rovers one an early 200tdi ….needed a part resto the inner wings were shot . 2a series and a 109 belonging to Hugh ferning Whittingstall that is getting the treatment..it’s going to be in his next series of River Cottage …..worth keeping an eye out for .🙂

Great project @g00se78 Good call @Finn19

There used to be a company in London called the London Electric Cab Company who specialised in converting old FX4 Hackney cabs.
They realised that the BMC engine/gearbox combo was similar to the Series and Defender and consequently did a few Landy conversions.
I remember their motor was a straight swap for the engine using the existing gearbox.
I think they merged with another company or got bought out (maybe dissolved by the big motor corps?).
