Range Rover Sat Nav Upgrade to DVD for L322 2002-05 Models

I do indeed. Not so straight forward though i'm afraid. Start by getting yourself a European BMW TCU (Must be GSM, doesn't have to have Assist). Then let me know and i'll guide you through what to do next.

Hi Neil,

I've been looking to retrofit bluetooth for ages and am about to give up and install a Parrot system (all hidden though). What is a BMW TCU and where can I get one? Once fitted does the bluetooth display the caller etc on the centre screen.

I should probably mention I have a Vogue, '53 plate.

Thanks

Ben

May be worth you having a look in the bluetooth section at www.roverupgrades.com

They dont tell you how to do it, and they use the ULF module which is more expensive than a TCU

A TCU is a 'Telematics Control Unit' and is a replacement for the old BMW ULF module that is the most common way to retrofit bluetooth to a range rover. The main difference of the TCU over the ULF is there is no need for a pairing button, or a passkey. The TCU goes into pairing mode for 2 minutes each time you start the car. This is great if fitting to a rangie as you dont have to worry about cutting your dash apart to fit the button. Plus, if you already have voice recognition, or a built in phone, you dont need a microphone either.

The TCU will plug into the phone module you already have installed BUT the pin configuration is different. So you need to take some pins out the plug in your car and swap them over. The ones you need to swap depends on what you have currently and what module you are installing, but is fairly straight forward.

In your car, you will currently has two aerials pluged into the phone module. One is the GSM antenna that sends the phone signal to the nearest mobile receiver. The second is an aerial to allow the in build handset to talk to the car. This becomes redundant after the conversion, but you have to replace it with a bluetooth antenna which should be around £20 to £25 from BMW.

Hi,have just purchased a mk4 dvd unit from Europe and have installed it with no bother. The software version is sw 4-1/00 and also have bought latest nav disk 2010 high plus a cd with mk4 software update sw 4-1/02. I have two problems 1.the dvd player will read the 2010 map disk but not the cd with the software on to update. 2 the onscreen monitor has been set to the gb language but on reading the map disk it speaks in some eastern european language and do not know how to change this so it speaks in english, I would have thought that the voice instructions would be on the map disk. I have copied the said software onto my own cd and also tried this in the drive but again it will not read it. Have also tried my original mk3 cds in this drive but again it will not read these. seems strange that it will read dvds and not cd. Could the mk4 be faulty as it should read cds as well as dvds, any help would be appreciated.
regards stephen

4-1/00 was the latest published by BMW.

4-1/02 must be a modified version. Has it been modified properly?

If the OS on the CD is the same as whats in the nav already it wont do any update and will reject the CD. It would help if you told us what happened instead of just saying 'wont read the cd'

What does it actually do? freeze up? give an error message? What?

Hi thanks for the reply, the message shown on the monitor when the cd is inserted is incorrect cd/dvd. this also happens when I insert my original range rover map cds in as well.
I have been looking at various web sites for any help and have got this information from www.eurosatnav.com voice proximity alerts require both the 2010-1 high &V32 voice software installed on your system with software level sw 4-1/01, this is a new version of v32 so if your system is sw 4-1/00 or lower you will require both upgrades to have the voice alerts. As I cannot upgrade the firmware I cannot get any further. I have also copied the v32 software from the cd onto a dvd dislk but again it will not read this saying incorrect cd/dvd.

Stephen

How do you know the software on the CD you have bought is sw 4-1/02? Have you used a hex editor to check it?

Everything you are telling me suggests the CD you have is the same version as what is installed which is why the Nav unit is rejecting it.

It will reject your Range Rover map cd as these WONT work on the MK BMW Unit.

You need to copy the content of the CD onto your computer, and look at the sw_rel.tbl file in the RR directory to find out the version number. If it's the same as what you already have installed then you will need to change the version number to force the nav computer to upgrade

OR

Downgrade to v29 or something similar then re-upgrade back using the v32 disc you have

you can get v29 from HERE

Hi,Have downloaded v29 which gives me a folder named bmwv29, on opening this folder I find two items one is named v29.mdf and the other is v29.mds do I now extract these files to another folder and then burn them to a cd and try them in the satnav to down grade?

Read the info on the link below (you could have just googled mdf file extention like i did)

http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/mdf

Then you can just install one of these programms, and double click on the MDS file. Burn to disc and insert in Nav Computer.

Alcohol 120%
CyberLink PowerDVD 9
MagicISO
IsoBuster

If you want to view the content of the MDF file, either burn to disc and then view disk on PC, or install Daemon Tools and open the MDF file in that (its an image viewer program)

Alcohol 120%
CyberLink PowerDVD 9
MagicISO
IsoBuster

Hi, this is my first post so please forgive any errors or faux pas.

I have been trying to get a mk4 dvd upgrade for some time now and have not found anyone who sells them. Please can someone let me know where these can be bought from and what sort of price I should expect to pay.

I have also noticed a 2nd hand unit from a 2005 X5 is for sale on ebay (Part no 65906971353). Does anyone know if this will work and if so what I will need to do to get it up and running in my 2002 L322 Range Rover. Also where can I get the correct firmware and dvd maps to get all the goodies (TMC, speed camers etc..).

Many thanks.

Have you ready any of this post? Or searched the internet atall?

All of the questions you have asked are well documented.

Buy a unit from Ebay ofr BMW Dealer - the item number you quote doesn't pull anything up on ebay or realoem.com. You need a mk4 dvd drive from any BMW EXCEPT E65, E66 or E67 as they were fibre optic (from 2003 onward)

You can get maps and firmware from BMW. To get the goddies you need to modify the genuine maps you have bought from bmw. go to www.xoutpost.com and look in the navigation forum for navtweak and poison threads.

READ READ READ then come back once you have ready everything and still have questions. I gaurentee every question you ask will be answered somewhere else.

Ref changing the language - you need to do this with an app such as Navcoder which you connect into the IBUS and alter all sorts of things. I used to have a 2003 M3 so kept all the bits that I learnt from www.xoutpost.com. When I got my 2003 Vogue it had Mk3, bought a Mk4 off ebay and it was in Italian at first :)!

Hi R1ray

I am a new member, have had range rovers for a number of years I actually own a classic autobiography. I have just purchased a 2004 autobiography (which I have some doubts about) and have read with great interest your posts over satnav systems and CD units.

I note you live in Walsall not far from Solihull I was wondering if we could meet for a chat I would like some more advice on upgrades and part numbers of these.

I understand that neither of us want to post contact details over the forum how about we meet at a local pub to you (where of course drinks can taken)?

Re: RR Sat Nav Language.

I have just upgraded to a MK4 system with V32 and sw 4-1/00.

The only languages I can get are Italian, German or French.

Can anyone advise on how to get English?

The languages are selected in the settings screen.

Basically :

Acquire the latest firmware update (which is currently V32) either from your local BMW parts department on a CD, or by downloading from here :

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IP0KD0O0

(To check which version of your operating system is already installed on your Mk4 system go to the 'Set' menu on your screen and in the top RH corner it will say 4-1/80 if V28 is installed, 4-1/90 for V29.0, 4-1/91 for V29.1, etc. If you already happen to be on V32 (4-1/00) you have to downgrade to an earlier version before you can upgrade to your custom version)

Use a program called NavTweak (free download) to replace the existing splash screen with your own and burn your custom version of V32 onto a CD and load it into your Mk4 for it to update the operating system (takes about 6 minutes to do).

I used a splash screen created by Vortec4800 on another forum (attached below) but you can use any image that you've knocked up in Photoshop as long as it's saved as a .gif file of 400 x 234 pixels resolution.

The only clue from other posts is that I need to use the ibus to change languages in the operating system.

Where is the best place to access the ibus on a 2004 Range Rover Vogue?

Can it be accessed near the MK4 DVD drive in the boot?

Advice would be appreciated.
