3.5 V8 Efi from a K-reg Disco

A few delays as expected.... the ring/flex plate only arrived today and also waiting for a hi-lo/difflock assembly as the one with the auto box was for a Borg Warner and only hi-lo.

There was some corrosion in the footwells and I asked Phil to look at them whilst the floor etc is out...and after a bit of probing he found this...

The hole in the driver's well is within 30 cm of the brake box, so both footwells being repaired and welded up. Might as well get it done now as it's accessible. Fortunately its the only rot he's found (apart from the bulkhead corners which are a job for the summer).

The autobox and TC are in, do the footwells (1 day?), now the starter ring plate etc have arrived the engine can be mounted up, then a couple of days welding, plumbing, wiring, and fettling. Got to fit the oil cooler and pipes, shifter, ECU etc, lots of little jobs; still not sure if the fan cowling, hoses, brackets, oil filter will fit blah blah blah. Add a day of running, tweaking and testing and I'm thinking w/b 14 May
But who knows; after all, it is a Land Rover :D

Ho hum, yet more delay.....:(

Fan and fan shroud don't line up with rad and a fan shroud from a V8 90 won't line up either. To fit the Disco V8 it needs a NAS cowl but they are very dear and change the rad to a NAS which is even dearer; looking at about £500

So will use the 16" Kenlowe from the 2.5 engine; it's large and it works and I'll just have to get over my aversion to electrical fans :evileye: and watch the temp gauge.

I've have a VDO temperature gauge in degrees Celcius and now need to get an X-Fan Thermostatic Fan Switch to plumb into bottom hose to replace the Kenlowe capillary sensor which was in the top hose and the temp setting dial, replace all with a 3 way switch in the cab - auto/on/off directly to the sensor.

Capo, sitting in a dark corner, rocking to and fro and muttering to himself.....:crying:

If you have the cowl from the donor disco you may be able to modify it to fit. The replacement NAS cowl is a modified disco cowl, but they are serpentine engines (like my 3-9 is) so may not suit a v belt engine.

Thanks @paul c
I couldn't get the cowl from the donor engine - a 3.5 EFi (rare beast as it's 3.5 hotwire 14CUX V-belt in a 92 (K) Disco1) - but I have this one :

but it won't line up with the viscous and the rad.
For now I'll use the 16" Kenlow but will keep my eyes open for a suitable cowl for the future.

Bear in mind that there were factory fitted V8s, so you'd be wanting a cowl from one of them - the engine is the same at the front end*. I suspect hens teeth and unicorn poo are easier to find though

* Apparently ALL the rover V8s from the 3.5 right through to the 4.6 had identical external block dimensions - right down to still using UNC threads ! So parts are easy to swap around, just with (IIRC) a spacer needed if fitting a later non-dizzy front cover with an earlier crankshaft (or could be the other way round) due to differences in length of the crankshaft nose.

Both my former V8s were factory fitted, and I'm sure the cowl hole was more central. To think of all those factory V8s that had the viscous fan and cowl chucked and replaced with electric fans :( As said before I'd prefer viscous to electric despite some drawbacks, but it looks like I'm going to learn how to live with them

And the conversion is taking much longer than planned (no surprise ) engine, autobox, cooler, rad etc are in but with Phil on hols it's the two of them and a helper, and business is brisk so they can only do mine when missing parts have arrived and not on another job. Things like exhaust bits, water and air hoses, oil lines and unions, wiring, clips etc. The EFi loom was cut so that has to be repaired too. Realistically he said if he only worked on the Landy it'd be about another week's work to get her finished, tested and ready to sign off, but in reality it'll probably be at least another two to three weeks :(
I've read enough forum threads to realise a conversions will always take twice as long and cost twice as much as planned

Popped over to drop off a thermoswitch housing for the fan and a couple of other bits.
Engine, autobox, transfer box and props in, loom repaired, rotting floor wells welded but that's about it.
Waiting for coolant hoses, autobox oil cooler hoses, silly things like new longer starter motor leads (was on RHS now on LHS), fixing up the GB and TB levers, plumb in new rad and fan/thermoswitch, fuel pump /filter /HP fuel lines, exhaust, and whatever else. As Phill is away the work has pretty much stopped :( Back on the 18th apparently, but I've given up holding my breath as I'm going purple
He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is that you always gotta wait
I'm waiting for my man, ah work it now…

Engine plumbed in and running ok :D Still to do: exhaust, auto oil cooler, wiring behind the dash is a mess thanks to the PO bodging rather than repairing the warning light module  so new circuit film and bulb holders for the module, loom wiring to the various sensors, fan, ECU, fixing in the auto shifter, putting it all back together, testing, tweaking etc. I didn't ask for an ETA and they didn't offer one, just glad it's progressing :)

Sounds like this will be fun. Off on holiday tomorrow. Wife has packed as much as she likes, so only the 110csw will be able to take the load. Love my V8 110

Nearly done apparently ...
Waiting for delivery of new props, exhaust centre and tailpipe sections, & pas hoses.....should be here this week. A couple of days of fitting, plus another for testing and fettling.
Looking thru' the above posts I said this a few times now  but it does look like it's finally coming together.

Quick question for V8 EFIers....what is the length and internal diameter of the plenum to air filter box (barrel with a trumpet on the bulkhead) air hose? The only one we can find is NAS, costs a fortune and as rare as...on my last V8 I had a length of corrugated hose but can't recall the dimensions.

Do Kenlowe still make fans? I know a friend was having difficulty trying to find one for his Tdi, Ended up buying a Revotc fan from rimmer bros I think it was.
Looked like quite a well thought out kit, though it was not cheap. 2 Fans on a purpose built mounting bracket. Mind you, in this case it might help if he had a grille which let some air through

But a bit clueless on the electrics though. The main feed for the fans should have come direct from the battery - there is nowhere in the standard LR loom suitable for taking that sort of power off, especially not the coil feed  The feed for the thermostat should (or can*) come off the ignition, but that's only a small current switching a relay to control the fans.
* There is an argument for it not coming off the ignition - that way the fans can "run on" if you stop with a hot engine. There's a few cars where you can hear the fans still running after it's parked up.

Alwsys been a fan (!) of viscous but for the conversion not going that route due to incompatibility of the rad/fan/shroud I have (and can't find what I need without spending loads of money e.g. NAS spec.
Have a single 16" Kenlow and an XEng thermoseitch. Like the idea of a non-ignition switch source so the fan runs when the engine is hot even if the engine is off (like MrsCapo's Panda); flat battery if it doesn't switch off but I'd rather that than an overhot engine.

Kenlowe have stopped selling fans to 'the public;' I think they still sell to manufacturers..

Yep there you go:

"Kenlowe only supply fans to vehicle manufacturers/engineering companies and field replacements for existing specialist applications. We no longer make or supply thermo electric fan packages for retrofit on individual cars for the automotive aftermarket. "

Shame used to like them.. though never liked the 'cable tie through the rad' mounting system - killed at least one rad that way so always went for a proper frame after that.

Air hose from plenum to afm on its way: 1mx80mm flexy hose off eBay £12 or NAS spec hose (USA) $199 so took the former!
Front & rear props, exhaust parts, PAS pipework etc and new oil cooler (one off eBay is rusting and the unions cut off too close to the fins) all en route this week.
Big dent in credit card but at least she's being put together nicely.
Getting there........
