Anyone thinking about going electric ?

If you pass your test in an auto, you can't drive a manual.

What about passing a test in an electric vehicle?
Oh oh , I know this one , your able to drive like a ladies reproductive parts and look down from your lofty pious perch and point your fingers at normal people , even though you’ve been part of the friggin problem for years , just like cyclists who drive f**k knows how far to clog up other peoples country lanes ……am I close ??

I think this should probably be in what grinds your gears but people that say if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. FK OFF.
And don't get me started on cyclists.

Ok, but keeping this back on topic - again, there may be circumstances where going electric may / will work - depending upon the individual circumstances. That is going to be a combination of economics / availability / range, other factors., etc. Electric cars are not a panacea for all. What works for me may not work for others. What works for me now may not work for me in 10 years time. But at the end of the day I am open to it. And if circumstances dictate and make sense, Libby would get converted.

Ok back on track. No point in converting any of mine to electric, I'd rather keep them original than bow to wokism. It's not going to be an issue in my lifetime so sod it why bother. If my kids are anything to go by they've no interest in my landrovers anyway their future is most likely an alternative fuel source but neither are that bothered about driving anyway. Tbh I'd much rather be able to use public transport myself if it actually existed where I live. Driving is no fun anymore.

IF other industries were brought to task along with coal burning countries etc etc then the likes of us afflicted can happily bumble around in our oil and petrol burning motors making little or no soddin impact

getting china or russia to invest in renewables doesn't stop people getting lung disease in central london.

Funny thing is, I promised myself I'd consider it if my engine blew up. But it didn't blow up as such, I had creeping death that started with "whip the head off to see..." and ended up with a full rebuild.

Still tempted by an electric 88 for off-road play, range wouldn't be an issue as I'd tow it there on the back of the 109 and once you're driving most of the energy you burn going uphill you get back on the way down from the regen.

I've been sort of half following this thread, but I would definitely consider the whole electriky thing. Or whatever makes sense at the time of swapping out the diesel lump.

I would love to keep my series on the road for as long as possible. If I'm careful, I might even see its 100th birthday!

But before I get making plans about all that, I suppose I should just get it back together as-is

Electric vehicles the more I see them or hear them ..”no sound” the more I don’t like the idea ..some old boy was walking up the lane outside my house last weekend in the middle of the road with a electric golf behind him .I said to him theres a car behind you be careful….bloody thing I didn’t hear it was his reply ..🤣
I guess the idea of driving something that makes no noise and in my opinion look incredibly ugly has no appeal to me whatsoever..and I don’t think that if everyone in the world drove an electric vehicle it would cure the environmental problems the world has ..
Mind you the BMW i8 is sexy as hell ..😍 7E762A1F-FBEC-481E-A5D8-88FB80F9BBDE.jpeg

I think that is over sensationalised and not fact based. most of what you hear from cars at distance is white noise from tyre friction. You may have a point in car parks and stuff where pedestrians are involved

majority of hydrogen is produced from natural gas, robbing Peter to pay Paul
The law of conservation of energy applies here....can it be circumvented by using solar.??
Despite my flippancy (a natural defence mechanism) it's a serious question.
Can there be an energy source that is 100percent efficient looking at it in global or even cosmic terms?

I guess like a lot of people being brought up with old cars .you “me” are set in your ways of how you like vehicles to be .I had v8 muscle cars over the years and they excited me .old landys they excited me ..the new era of vehicles that are dawning just don’t float my boat …that’s me ..

Yes, spares will be our main worry, probably relatively soon too.
We seem to have used up most of the army surplus and are now reliant on spares produced from goodness knows where.
I’ve been thinking about this recently and what do I need to be stocking up on .

Gearbox stuff seems ok at the moment but the single piece bush seems to be getting harder to find and quality of what’s available is questionable 🤔 Bearings I’m guessing should be ok as there is some crossover on bearings .

I couldn’t find T Box thrust washers last year when I rebuilt the gearbox despite some suppliers showing on line they had stock.

Engine consumables seem ok to get but I’ve no idea about the interchangeability of bottom end shells and seals or if they only fit series vehicles . As for top end engine parts I’ve no idea on stock held and if they are being routinely made . The quality of some available stuff seems changeable with no logic .

Bigger stuff I just don’t know . A spare diff ? Props? Half shafts ? Swivel balls etc .

Any views from other members ?

How viable is the forum commissioned parts for sale ?

I don't think so?

There will always be losses, no matter what you use. Heat, light, sound etc. I think mostly losses to heat are the greatest losses and hardest to control.

Maybe I'm way off on that though, please correct me if I am! :)

I was sat outside the house one morning this week, enjoying the tranquility and a coffee, when an old Disco stopped right next to me. The old couple were fannying around with a satnav. The noise and fumes were terrible, so after 5 mins I knocked on the window and politely asked them to either turn the engine off or move on a bit..
That's something I won't miss at all when we have more electric cars about..

Basically, that's correct. The more conversions the energy hast to undergo, the more chances of inefficient losses. the individual ineffeciencies will vary, but the greater the number, the more it adds up.
