Engine died- crank shaft fault

Fare play to LR, told me today that they accept responsibility and that they will pay full costs for replacement engine. Still not happy that it happend but cannot fault the customer service.....may hang onto the car for a while after all!

I had 2015 rrsport engine seize on me july this year, that I have had since new, I used the memo from manufacturers that is on the forum to argue it was a manufacturing fault and not wear and tear, and under sale of goods act poor quality and not fit for purpose, they put a new engine in foc, dont give up seek legal advice using that memo that admits its a fault.

I bought a new discovery in December 2015, immaculate condition now with only 59000 miles on the clock, driving down M1 Engine shut down with no warning, managed to get to the hard shoulder.
Just got the car recovered to a local garage for them to find the Engine seized.
Looks like it's going to be e-mail time to LR to see if they are prepared to do any thing about this.
Its extremely disappointing given the value of the vehicles new and now only 4 years old with a relatively low milage

Hi,
we have had the same problem with our 2016 RangeRover, the engine just completely died. Collected and taken to local dealership who confirmed it needs a new engine. The car is only 3 months out of warranty so the dealer was confident LR would cover the costs, they have come back to us and have said they will pay a percentage, leaving us with £5500 to pay. I am absolutely devastated that this can happen! Surely a car engine should last longer than 3 years? I have tried to speak to a manager at LR to express my disappointment and ask for further explanation and they won't even speak to me? I have never known customer service like this before? The customer service assistant tried to put me through to a manager 3 times and they just refused to speak to me? Has anyone else had any success when speaking to them?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry that you are going through the same as I did. Such wonderful vehicles but so unreliable, not sure how much longer I will keep mine. I must say, LR treated me well in the end. You need to let them know that you are aware of this issue with the 3l tdv6 engine and that you are entitled to a free replacement engine through GOOD WILL. Explain that you are on forums and the issue is well known.....and do as I did and let them know that you will seek legal advise. They may have more financial muscle but they don't want bad publicity. Best of luck.

I had a similar issue with a my 2010 RRS TDV6 in 2017. Car just stopped and I had to get it towed to my local Harwoods dealership in Lewes who diagnosed a crank fail. They actually couldn't have been more helpful and managed to get LR to agree to a new engine FOC.
In my case:
- Car was out of warranty, but I had an extended warranty - the engine was apparently replaced as a goodwill gesture, NOT through extended warranty
- Car was bought from used Harwoods and maintained through Harwoods. I suspect this had a strong bearing on LR's decision to pay for the engine FOC.
I know in similar situations, replacement engine costs were only partially paid or not at all if the car had been bought or serviced by non franchised dealers. These were a couple of the questions posed to me when LR were making their decision. They seemed interested in how 'loyal' customers were. I suppose the excuse thrown by LR as well would be that they couldn't be sure that the maintenance quality of an independent mechanic couldn't be verified. However it is suspected that this is a manufacturer fault not necessarily down to poor maintenance.
LR in China seem to be being more proactive than the UK in this issue http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-01/01/c_137712989.htm

Incidentally got rid of mine as soon as I could. Shame as they are nice cars, but a bit of a timebomb. If fuel was cheap I would have probably got a V8.

Had the same thing happen to me on Friday, quoted £10k for a new engine but will be discussing with LR legal department on my return from holiday

After the car being in the garage for 3 weeks finally LR have agreed to replace the engine FOC, agree that they are more responsive if you have had the car serviced by a main dealership

Take it back and request a refund on either of the following grounds: Goods not fit for purpose. Or goods not of merchantable quality. Sale of goods act 1975 is the relevant legislation and you are entitled to a full refund.
Sale Of Goods Act is now defunct you need the Consumer Act

Hi Peter, really interested to read this, as my RRsport 2015 engine has just seized up, 2 days ago only 52000 miles and full main dealer service history, car is with Harwoods and they tell me they will contact RR customer experience to see if they will pay for it good will and all that. I was wondering who you spoke to at RR customer experience, as I would like to talk to them myself to get the ball rolling.

Hi, the dealer Lookers took care of it, I would speak with the service manager, LR know it is a fault and providing that the car has been serviced by the main dealer then they may replace the engine but you do need to chase them. Good luck Pete

My RRsport 2017 seized a day after it was serviced by the local land rover garage. No lights came on and when it was towed away they informed me the engine had seized. As it turned out there was oil left all over my drive. They replaced the engine but to date they wont tell me what really happened.

Having only just got the paperwork from LR it seems they have rebuilt the engine and not replaced it it doesn't seem to drive as smooth as it used to has any one else encountered this ?

How did u manage that???? Mines just done the same, had to pay engine specialist garage to strip engine to send to warranty co, they keep asking for more footage as such a big claim. Preparing For the answer to be a no so looking at how and who to speak to at Land Rover. Car 65 plate only 60000 on clock and fsh. Only had it 4 months!!!

Bought a used car from a third party dealer in July last year, Drove impeccably till April and then engine failed, as many have said extended warranty does not cover it. and as the Land rover warranty expired 4 months ago they will only repair in Good Will... but there is one hitch though... they are asking for previous service history as they cant find any. The only service detail I have is from the third party seller at 27270. Car has only done 36495. They are unwilling to pay if the car was not serviced. regardless of services, this is a design fault, should it not be precluded? Any advice will be much appreciated.

We are waiting for warranty company to give us an answer on ours. We have to pay for cost of stripping engine to find fault with an engine specialist company. They stripped three times over on different parts, then warranty co sent assessor last Thursday. Waiting for verdict on whether they’ll pay . Spoke to Land Rover who want the car and engine to do assessments all over again but that’s more money to have car and engine moved separately. They say they might contribute depending on what they find. Has full service history and 60000 on clock. I’ve recently learnt from another unlucky customer that you can reject the car if it goes wrong in the first 6 months. The garage gets one chance to repair it then has to refund.
