Series Chassis numbers from SII onwards

With the SII chassis numbers, the first three digits are the destination, type, model, and engine type. The fourth digit is the model year, and the last 5 digits are the serial number

With SIIa chassis numbers, the first three digits tell you the model, engine type, body type, wheelbase, the model years (as in between 1970 and 1971, for example) and its destination market…(LHD or RHD, Home or CKD). The next 5 digits are the serial number, and the last digit (a letter, from A to F usually, A means it is unmodified from the original design) tells you how many design modifications the model has had since first the first one came off the production line.

VIN numbers 1979 on: (first 3 digits are SAL in all cases) So, now there is a more complex numbering system… SAL= manufactured by Land Rover, LB is the model (SIII in this case) the 6th digit is the wheelbase, the seventh the body type, the eighth the engine type, ninth, steering and transmission, tenth, the model year, the eleventh digit tells us where the vehicle was assembled. (A is Solihull, B is Capetown, C is Zimbabwe, D is Thailand, F is CKD, NON UK location, J is Malaysia, K is Kenya, N is Morocco, P is Pretoria, T is Brazil, W is Turkey) The last six digits are the vehicle serial number.
